Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with Doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Founded in 1989, Reach Out and Read serves 3.9 million families annually by encouraging the development of language skills through reading, thereby, maximizing the child’s language skills prior to starting school.
Early language skills, the foundation for reading ability, are based primarily on language exposure. While some families rely on television or radio to provide language exposure, research has shown these media to be a poor substitute for live communication. After all, young children want to communicate with the people who are most important in their lives, their parents!
What We Do
Beginning at the six month well baby visit, our pediatricians provide developmentally appropriate guidance about books and reading, always encouraging Mom and Dad to read aloud to their child. This provides an opportunity for family bonding and helps to instill a lifelong love of reading.
At periodic visits, our pediatricians give the child an age appropriate book to take home and read with his/her parents. This reinforces the importance of reading and the need to develop the positive connections between reading and family.
